Personal Essay: My Personal Definition Of Success

By definition success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. In a way my personal definition of success does not veer too far from its original definition. Society has tricked todays generation to view success as the attainment of material and physical objects. For instance, someone can automatically be categorized as prosperous, by driving a luxury car, owning an above average home, having the ability to buy expensive stuff, and pretty much anything to do with consumerism. Unlike most, I measure success not by what a person is able to buy, but by what they have achieved, as far as personal goals, how happy they are, and most importantly how they were able to achieve their point of success.

Having a clear idea of what makes me happy, and knowing how to achieve and maintain it is a very productive way to stay focused on my personal success. My grandfather was not the richest man, but he always had the dream to be able to play all his favorite instruments, they included the guitar, the bass, the violin, saxophone, trumpet and drums. Despite his poverty he was motivated to find a way to make his dreams come true. He found old guitars and taught himself how to not only fix them up but also taught himself how to play them. He used the extra money he got from playing on the street and at local bars, to feed his family, and tried to save some to buy his next instrument. Little by little, he was able to teach himself how to play every single one of his favorite instruments, and was even recognized by his small Pueblo, for his outstanding musical abilities. Prior to his death he was invited to perform in front of the governor of the Mexican State Coahuila, and received many awards for his talents. Though he never became wealthy of his musical abilities, the love and the desire he had to learn to make beautiful music made him
