Measuring Success In Iliana Rome's First Job

Success is a relative term. Some people measure success by how many commas are in a bank account and size of house a person owns; some measure success by the amount of obstacles a person has overcome and still stands tall and strong. Using the second definition, a person can become successful with a reason to continue fighting and a group of people who will help them fight through adversity. In First Job by Iliana Roman, a single mother who dropped out of high school because of a pregnancy, fights her way back into the work force. Trying to keep her children with a roof over their heads, Iliana works many jobs in order to one day own her own salon, which was purchased with help from her family. Hungry for knowledge, Roman picks up skills such as record keeping, communication skills that aided her talking to customers, and other business related talents. A degree isn’t necessary to have success, though it does make it easier. Everyone knows people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Ralph Lauren, who became wealthy without a college degree, but that doesn’t mean they are lazy like some of the people who shield behind their examples. These people who are commonly used as points for people who try to be lazy in school never stopped learning. These people were so skillful at learning from their personal experiences that college wasn’t necessary for them to become educated. People without that skill, will find success easier if they do go to school. Roman, for example, went back to school to earn her GED and then go to cosmetology school.
