Competencies The Clinical Informatics Registered Nurse (CI) responsible for the implementation of the tele-psychiatry program should demonstrate Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) graduate-level competencies to assure a successful implementation that improves quality and safety. The QSEN graduate-level competencies were developed to assure graduate-level nurses are able to demonstrate the skills and attitudes required to improve quality and safety in their workplace. The Registered Nurse responsible for this project needs to demonstrate knowledge of the current barriers preventing mental health patients from receiving patient-centered care in the facility. They will need skills that allow them to develop plans that address the barriers preventing the integration of patient-centered care. The nurse should be committed to making the system changes required to create a patient-centered care environment. Informatics competencies focus on the use of information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate errors and support decision making (QSEN, 2012). These competencies help the CI evaluate the benefits and limitations of various health information technologies and their impact on safety and quality. The CI should have skills in championing communication technologies that help professionals coordinate, collaborate and protect patient’s privacy. Having an appreciation of the need for consensus and collaboration in developing systems will help make this a successful program.
