Preparing for Success at the Graduate Level
Preparing for academic success at the graduate level can be a daunting task. First, one must realize the reason they are in a graduate program to begin with. What goals do you hope to achieve in completing a graduate program? The reasons can be many such as better job opportunities, higher income, or perhaps just for the prestige of earning a graduate degree.
Other reasons could include setting a good example for that of your children or gaining the respect of family and friends. Regardless of the reason, once the decision is made to start a graduate program there must be a goal established in order to achieve success. Setting goals

I need to go back and get a refresher on what a simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex sentence consists of. I also need to improve on eliminating biased language from my writing and refresh myself with what a noun phrase, verb phrase, dependent clause, and adverb is. My strengths were in grammar mechanics and avoiding plagiarism. Many students struggle with plagiarism. According to (University of Phoenix, 2007):
Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s ideas as your own. Whether accidental or intentional, plagiarism is a serious violation of the Student Code of Conduct and carries significant consequences. Understanding what plagiarism is will help you create original work without worrying about possible penalties.
To improve in writing it is recommended to allow a professor, classmate, or tutor in the campus-writing center to review your rough draft (Dunn, 2011). This will certainly provide constructive criticism in content, grammar, and plagiarism. In order to manage time and stress, I think it best to study and write in a quiet place that will not allow for distractions. I do not like music or televisions on while I study or write papers.
I find the noise to be a distraction and I usually will find myself watching whatever is on television or listening to the music instead of focusing on my work. I also try to work a little each day so that I do not feel overwhelmed at the end of the week when a paper or assignment is due. I
