According to the Associated Press, Uber confirmed that terrorist Sayfullo Saipov was a current employee of their company when he decided to rent a Home Depot truck and rundown 19 unsuspecting individuals, killing 8 people and injuring 11. The second incident occurred on February 20, 2017, when Uber driver Jason Dalton went on a shooting rampage, killing six unsuspecting individuals between his pickups; however, none of the pickups were victims. In a national poll of 3,000 riders, 81 percent said safety was the chief factor when using either a taxi or a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft. However, despite safety concerns, people continue to use these services because of the convenience; for the purpose of work and hauling their children around town for afterschool and summer activities. Today, people tend to have short memories in order to enjoy the convenience that life has to offer; therefore, they tend to rationalized or minimize the seriousness of these safety issues until the next incident occurs.
