Substrate Concentration Lab Report

PART A. Hypothesis: The Effect of Catalase Concentration
It was hypothesized that if different number of disks would relate to the rate of the reaction produced then increased number of disks would result in increased rate of reaction. This occurs because an increased enzyme presence allows the substrate to rapidly change into a product providing all other factors such as substrate concentration, pH, ionic concentration, and temperature remain unchanged or fixed. ("What Is the Effect of Substrate Concentration on Enzyme Activity?", 2016)

PART B. Hypothesis: Influence of Substrate Concentrate on Catalase Activity
It was hypothesized that if different diluted concentrations of hydrogen peroxide would relate to the rate of the enzyme activity.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this lab is to measure the activity of an enzyme and the effects of environment conditions on enzyme activity. Enzymes are catalysts; agents that speed up chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy required. This means that a catalyst helps reactions occur at a greater speed and lower temperature.…

The substrate in this reaction is the H2O2. The purpose of this lab is to determine how temperature, pH, boiling, and hydroxylamine effected the activity of the enzyme, peroxidase. Temperature can change the speed with which the substrate and enzyme bind together. When temperatures are higher they move at faster speeds, which could cause the hydrogen bonds to break. The pH values can change the 3D shape of the proteins and, therefore, influence how well the substrate and enzyme bind together.…

The specificity of enzymes helps make them powerful tools in nature; they are allowed to form enzyme-substrate complexes. (Bioinfo.org.cn, 2015) Reaction rates controlled by enzyme can be measured using experimental methods where the factors such as enzyme, pH and temperature can be studied. These results can be…

From 10oC to 20oC, the average rate of reaction of the class results is higher than the raw results rate of reaction by a maximum of 0.75mL/sec. However, from 30oC to 50oC, the raw results presented a slightly higher lot of rate of reaction than the average rate of reaction from the class results. The highest rate of reaction difference was for 50oC, with a difference of 0.3mL/sec between the raw and average results. This information supports the hypothesis, yet the result for 10oC and 20oC do not support the hypothesis, as due to the information known about enzymes, the lower the temperature, the slower the rate of reaction should be, therefore the average rate of reaction does not support the…

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the working concentration of Tetracycline (TNC) on Escherichia coli (EC). We used EC because of its characteristics of fast growth in different environments, complete gene sequence, and availability. Our antibiotic, TNC, is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is effective to many types of bacteria. This is because it obstructs tRNA anticodon from reading the mRNA codons in the 30S ribosomal subunit which halts the lengthening of the protein chain. My team determined that we would use a wide range concentration between 0 and 100 µg/ml of TNC.…

Our cells usually make toxic byproducts however they use enzymes to break them down into harmless chemicals. When an excess amount of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) is formed in the cell during metabolism/cell respiration catalase enzymes are utilized to break down the toxic chemical into oxygen gas and water. An experiment was conducted was to see if the Ph level affected the rate of which the catalase broke down hydrogen peroxide. A hypothesis was created, which stated that if the ph was lower than the control than the rate of hydrogen peroxide decomposition would be greater. In the experiment there were three trials, a control, a high level ph, and a low level…

Do mole ratios affect the amount of reactant that is produced? This experiment tested why mixing reactants in different mole ratios affected the amount of the product and the amount of each reactant that is left over. To solve the problem, the lab contained reacting sodium bicarbonate(baking soda) and acetic acid(vinegar) in different ratios and seeing if the product changed. The data suggests that the higher ratio of baking soda to vinegar creates the most product. For the ratio 3:1, the final grams of sodium acetate(product) was 0.09, the product of 1:2 was 0.52, while for the ratio 1:3, the final grams of the sodium acetate was 1.65.…

ABSTRACT: Enzymes are catalysts, speeding up of chemical reactions, of biological systems by lowering the activation energy (Transitioned from the AP Biology Lab Manual). In addition, in order to determine the rate of an enzymatic reaction, one must measure a change in the amount of at least one specific substrate or product over time. We were curious about determining the effects of pH and heat on enzymatic activity because these are factors that usually affect the shape of an enzyme. We measured enzyme activity using an indicator for product at different pHs and temperatures.…

Specific environmental conditions may play a role in how enzyme activity is affected. We conducted an experiment to observe whether the change in temperature altered the reaction rate of an enzyme. The activity rate of our enzyme, catechol oxidase, was collected by analyzing the changes in absorption rate of the enzyme in a buffered catechol solution after being placed in four different temperatures. In which one solution remained out in room temperature being to be our negative control. Each of the four solutions were placed in their respective temperature environment and for every two minute intervals, over a twenty minute time process, we read the concentration levels through a spectrophotometer.…

The prediction for this experiment was: when the temperature hits 80 degrees Celsius, the catechol will be at its optimal absorbance. The alternate hypothesis tested for this following experiment was that there is a significant relationship between catechol and pH. In contrast, the null hypothesis states that there is no significant relationship between catechol and oxidase and pH. This hypothesis will be supported if the rate of catechol oxidase does not increase. The hypothesis was tested by observing the reaction time of catechol oxidase at four different…

    Solubility Lab Report

Our lab consisted of combining small amounts of aqueous solutions in order to observe their soluble nature (or lack thereof). The key concept that was involved in this lab was the concept of solubility, the ability of a substance (the solute) to dissolve in a solvent rather than to form a solid precipitate. Through this lab, we were attempting to determine the solubility of the solutions as well as observe how the solutions interact with each other -- if they form a precipitate once combined or remain aqueous. Our results reflected the rules of solubility (go more in depth about the rules). Also, there were some more directly beneficial results due to the lab.…
