Substance Use Disorders Research Paper

Grocery stores across America are just ridding themselves of Halloween goodies- in time to make room for the incoming holiday treats. Americans consume up to half a pound of sugar a day, according to James DiNicolantonio writer for the New York Times. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders state that substance use disorders are present when two symptoms, from a list of 11, exist. Withdrawal, tolerance, and cravings, are three of the 11- all of which are produced by sugar consistently. We are addicted. The food industries have honed into this weakness, and as a result, 75 percent of packaged foods contain added sugar. Due to the fact that everyone is adding more sugar, wrappers have begun to be more attention grabbing, more alluring, and all together more common. It is redefined over and over again with each passing generation. One example of this is found in Hamlet (3.1.64) when the Prince is contemplating suicide and he says “To be or not to be”. This renown quote has found its way into society so prominently perhaps because it is ironic. He is being quite logical over whether he wants to live- yet he is thought to be mad. It is important to realize that things have not always been one way, and they will not stay one way. Realizing and acknowledging this gives individuals a larger piece of the puzzle, allows them to make informed decisions, and gives more perspective. Due to the fact that the world is full of diverse options, backgrounds, and point of views, it is hard to truly understand a concept completely. Taking into account various aspects of any concept will give a clearer picture of it. This would serve society well because as a whole individuals would be educated and informed, helping the government and institutions function
