However, first I had to learn what that was, what was the job description of a substance abuse counselor. What are the criteria for being a substance abuse counselor, what kind of education does it require? Is there training or certification, what does it take to call yourself a substance abuse counselor? After much research and interviewing of person in the field of substance abuse, it was discovered that there are criteria for being a therapist but not a counselor. They are two different job descriptions for each of those jobs. Now are they really that different and are there true and actual job descriptions for each job? To use a pragmatic approach and advocate for well-defined criteria and certifications, education levels and specific criteria to do therapy or counseling we need to define the problem as it exists with the Florida Legislation. . Upon further review, we need to define the term clinical, as it applies to counseling and therapy if we are to determine who is qualified to apply clinical services.
