Substance abuse disorders still linger as one of society’s most multifaceted and ever present problems that occur today. According to SAMHSA (2015) “substance use disorders occur when the recurrent use of alcohol and/or drugs causes clinically and functionally impairment on incidents such as mental health problems, disability, and failure to meet major responsibilities at work which eventually leads to financial losses, school, or home”. In addition, substance use disorders (SUDs) does not only affect the individual but can have a negative impact on the entire family. Also, SUDs are also associated with domestic violence, traffic accidents, and crime. For example, Washington Express details a case where an former F.B.I agent once responsible for arresting drug addicts became addicted to heroin, began stealing drug evidence to stay high, and now is facing prison time, leaving his wife alone to raise their son and was fired from the F.B.I.
Substance use disorders, can be defined as mild, moderate, or severe which specifies the level of severity, which is established based on the number of diagnostic criteria met by an individual (SAMHSA, 2015). In other words, they have a minimum of 2 to 3 and a maximum of 11 specific symptoms. According to the DSM-5, a diagnosis of substance use disorder is based on evidence of impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological criteria (SAMHSA, 2015).
