Autobiography: Chemical substances and how they affect our brains have always fascinated me. Fortunately, I haven’t been curious enough to find out for myself firsthand, despite the struggles I’ve experienced throughout my life. I grew up in an authoritarian household with a neglectful father. My parents had a very codependent marriage, which I later adapted to my own relationships later in life. I’ve always had a lot of anxiety and depression as a child.…

Substance Abuse by Fisher and Harrison, chapter 6: This chapter began with explaining the definition of use, misuse, abuse, and dependence which is very important to know since it helps mental health professionals in determining the appropriate intervention for each client. I feel this topic must be explained in a chapter alone because I also belong to a religious group and I know how these terms are confused. This chapter also focused on the assessment which is important for all mental health professionals not only to gather information, but also to avoid misdiagnosing client problems. The critical part of the assessment process is the psychosocial history which involves various areas that need to be assessed: AOD use history, family history, social history, legal history, educational history, occupational history, and medical history.…

Diagnosis The client, Gwen Cummings, comes to the inpatient substance use treatment facility presenting with apparent symptoms of severe substance use disorder and potentially childhood trauma. When suicidal thoughts or signs arise, the professional will remain calm and execute the correct procedures.…
Education can be a step taken to help prevent opioid use and misuse. A patient can be educated on the effects opioids can and will potentially have on them in the short and long run. Physicians should also be educated on what to look for in an addict or a potential addict. They should be screening their patients for potential risk factors, including mental illness, personal or family history of drug abuse. Not everyone taking pain medication will end in addiction, however, those that are at risk include, certain biological factors.…
