Professional counselors wear many hats when dealing with the drug addicted population and extended family who support the individual with the addiction. Educating and providing a plan of treatment as a counselor is the goal when treating addicts. The professional counselor assessment relies on documentation, new data, and any health concerns which will cause an alert in a therapeutic setting without passing judgement. In my opinion, most people just want to be heard and fully understood, but the skill set involved with that is not just being there, but letting the client talk. The client has to know that they’re really being heard and that would include being attentive, observing facial expression, body movement, and different gestures even being intrigued at times. Also, eye contact all employs a (please tell me more) kind of atmosphere and creates a positive, relaxed, comfortable, and trustworthy environment where the client can just open up. Not just open up to a counselor, but really open up to possibilities, when they hear, talk, and see what’s been going on in their lives, from their perspective. Also, they may be able to see a start to middle and hopefully the ending, and that’s all just with the power/skills set of listening bring about. Now, if you couple that with empathy, you leave your client feeling like you get them and that they are totally understood. Now with that and position that you’re in, you become a walking and living testimony.
Therefore, to the client you’re no longer just a counselor you also mature into an positive role model leading by example, and after the healing of addiction so in theory we refer to the quote/unquote soft skills, but in the field/real world, this can be some of
