Substance Abuse: A Brief Summary

This article talks about an experiment that was administered to see if substance abuse patients had an increase in sobriety after their treatment wzs complete. Generally, treatment for substance abuse is either inpatient or intensive outpatient-like group psychotherapy. Treatment is usually five weeks in length, or about a month long. Increase care after an individual completes their treatment is associaited with an improved outcome. The first three months after a person has completed their treatment are the most crucial months. A person whom has been diagnosed with substance abuse disorder is still susceptible to relapse, esepecailly immediately after completion of treatment. Many people look down on others for having mental health issues, but especially people whom are diagnosed with substnace abuse disorder. It is not something that can always be helped. Individuals often believe that someone who is diagnosed with substance abuse has brought it on themselves. They believe that if they just tried hard enough it could be cured. This is the exceedingly wrong thing to believe. It comes back to the negative stigma that still surronds mental health. There are things that are not always in someones control. If someone becomes dependent on a substance, you cannot accuse them of being selfish, or not trying hard enough to rid themselves of this. group psychotherapy is a wonderful thing for an individual to be a part of. It gives people the support that can be lackng in other aspects of their life. This is a group of eight or so people, all of whom are dealing with the same thing. People feel less alone in group therapy. It is one of the most common forms of treatment for substance abuse. Not only is group therapy more cost efficient, but it allows individuals to see how other people are coping. All mental health illnesses are extremely hard to cope with. People do not always view it the same way. They do not see mental health illnesses the same way they see other health issues. Substance abuse disorder, not only has to deal with the negative people who do not believe in mental health issues, but also people who believe they brought it upon themselves. Substnace abuse often gets tossed into its own category. People who study psychology do not always see substance abuse as a field they would like to enter.
