Subplot The Crucible

A great author once said, “Until an hour before the Devil fell God thought him beautiful in heaven”-Arthur Miller. This directly connects to The Crucible by Arthur Miller because this quote came directly from the book. The purpose of this book is directly conveyed through the use of dramatic irony, dialogues, and a powerful, interesting subplot. In The Crucible many people are accused of senseless accusations of witchcraft. In the end many lives are ruined and lost, also many shocking revelations are made. Arthur Miller was summoned into court to testify and give the names of people that were apart of the Communist party; when Miller refused, he was punished. His plays would not be viewed, and his character was destroyed.

This is shown between the conversation of Abigail and John Proctor, Proctor explains, “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time...”(Miller.1.22). Even though abby has just poured her heart out to Proctor he tells her that he wants nothing more to do with her, because he has just found out that Abby is the one that brought these mundane accusations against his wife.
Lastly, Miller uses a very interesting subplot to get his point across, “God forbid such a one be charged, but she has been mentioned in somewhat”(Miller.2.41). Mrs. Protoc had not committed any crimes of any sort, but Abigail just wanted Proctor to herself once Elizabeth was sentenced to jail for being framed. Proctor forgot a commandment and Hale believed that he was being condemned to hell.
The social and political lessons are stated in The Crucible as to why many fingers were pointed. The purpose was to show that history repeats itself.
