Suffering Reflection

Yes, I realize the October update is arriving in November. I knew something good was coming on the 3rd and I wanted to wait so I could tell you about it. On Thursday, November 3rd, Rooted Soul hosted a half-day retreat for local church planters. It was called Abide and is the first of what I hope will grow into be six retreats offered to church planters next year.

Abide is spaced created for church planters to reconnect their hearts with the heart of God through meditation on scripture and prayer. I provided them with a prayer prompt and the space necessary for them to listen to what God may desire to speak to them. Afterwards, we come together to allow them to listen to one another share what their experience was like and what they

One pastor mentioned wanting to find a mentor. We are going to get together in the next week or for coffee and to explore if meeting with him on a regular basis would be helpful. Pray for God to make clear what He would desire in this relationship.

Another opportunity you can pray for is an opportunity I might have to be a Pastor-in-Residence at the Center for Christian Thought at Biola University. This would be an opportunity to explore the topic of “Suffering and the Good Life” with professors from all over the country. It would grow and expand my capacity to be with those who are walking through difficult season and help them discern how God might redeem their suffering for good. When I think about the work I do as a bereavement group facilitator, I think this experience would be

These past two years, we have been privileged to see God work to bring about healing and transformation in very tangible ways in the lives of those who have made up our little church called The Grove. We have also sensed He has been bringing this season to an end. After several months of discernment and time listening for what God might desire to speak through those who make up this body of Christ, we have come to the hard decision of closing The Grove. We have peace about this decision, but are concerned that we will be able to help people transition well into other churches in our area. We will spend the next few months helping each one of our Grove family find a new home. Please pray for the hearts of those we have been privileged to serve and for God to lead each one to a place where they can share in significant ways what God has been doing in their spiritual lives over the past two

Good morning, today I was asked to talk about the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson of this last conference, and explain my feelings towards it. I read the talk and felt that we as young men & young women should give more service to the church. In the talk by Bonnie L. Oscarson, It stated, “Each person has something important to contribute and has unique talents and abilities that help the important work along.” The abilities that we as young women have help the service to spread like a weed. The big change that has helped spread this weed is the prophet just pronounced that 14 and older are now able to start ministering.…

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

Her explanation of the box has inspired me to look into a way to apply this characteristic within my own life as well as our campus ministry life. As far as my personal spiritual life goes, the year of 2017 is the year I will be stepping out of my comfort zone and expanding my horizons. With this being said, creating my own God box for this year will help tremendously with anxiety about this year in general and create a sense of comfort that God will and forever be by my side. On the topic of campus ministry, I feel as if incorporating an activity with the God box in a retreat or simply having a God box within the ministry room will serve as a way to convey to others that it is okay for you to lean on God for help at any given moment. The idea of the God box is a really unique way to draw oneself and others closer to…

Generations of immigrants have come to the United States looking for the “better life” this country has promised to offer within our borders, “opportunities for them and especially for their children” (Gonzales, 2015, p.73). The reality of this dream is broken, however, when forced to confront the limitations and exclusions the lack of citizenship status creates in nearly every aspect of their lives. As Lives in Limbo: Undocumented and Coming of Age in America conveys, undocumented youth, specifically the 1.5 generation, face unique challenges transitioning to adulthood in America and, more often than not, face the shattering of their American Dream in late adolescence. I was left feeling hopeful for the respondents in the book.…

We all are aware of the term PTSD or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder but have you ever witnessed it? PTSD is a mental disorder that occurs when a person goes through a traumatic event or events like war. For me the answer to that question was no until two years ago. The one verse I will forever live by is Psalm 143:8, “Let the morning bring the word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I entrust my life”. This verse tells me that I do not need to fear about singing in front people, or fear befriending people, or fear leading others, or fear anything in this world because the moment I gave my heart to God, He continually held onto it with such a delicacy. He knows that I trust and have faith in Him, and likewise, I know He trusts and has faith in me. Many people do not think about God having faith and trust in them, but He does.…
