In a typical story, there are two characters; the villain and the hero. The villain is usually seen as a horrible person who is mean and only thinks about themselves. Most often, villains are despised and the audience wants them to be defeated, but what most people do not realize is that most times the villain makes the story. Rasheed, for example, is Laila and Mariam’s villain and readers do not like him. However, if he was not a portrayed as the character that he is in the story readers would never see Mariam and Laila separately as characters and what makes them join forces ultimately never letting readers see the author’s purpose of leading through difficult times. They did not get along in the first few months of the marriage. Mariam refused to allow Laila to get away with doing nothing. She said harsh things to her and stayed away from her at all costs. When Laila had Aziza, Mariam began protecting the two of them from Rasheed, and in return Laila tried her best to protect Mariam from him as well. One night after Rasheed tried attacking Mariam but was stopped by Laila he said “I’m onto both of you. I won’t be made an ahmaq, a fool, in my own house” (Hosseini 216). The two women began to work together against him in order to survive through his harsh treatment. His actions bring them together. When they are brought together, Mariam takes on the motherly role of the two and does her best to make sure Laila and Aziza were taken care of. Even though at first Rasheed made Mariam shy and scared, he also brings out her leadership and her maternal instincts because she wants to protect Laila and Aziza from Rasheed. His villainy develops the characters and allows readers to see all angles of each character. His abuse shows the women’s protectiveness, the things he says shows their opinions on certain topics, and his actions show their boundaries. He is the reason readers are able to see the real Mariam and Laila. Although he is the villain, Rasheed plays an important role in the development of Mariam and Laila’s characters which then develops to the reader’s understanding of the author’s purpose. He is a terrible husband to these strong women with his abuse and selfishness, but he greatly contributes to their characters developing throughout the

We often focus more on the protagonist of stories, but what about the antagonist? Reading all three of the short stories Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates, A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, they all expand the idea of the “bad guy.” The antagonists are the ones that truly develop the situation of stories, because without them there wouldn't be a conflict, or a story in general... At least not an interesting one to say the most.…

Mariam and Laila are “poles apart in their disposition and conduct” (Akhtar, Rauf, Ikram, Raees). If the novel had been set in Afghanistan in peace, it would have been a “ story of contrasts,” a life of “stark deprivation” for Mariam and a privileged, professional career for Laila ((Akhtar, Rauf, Ikram, Raees). But war drags the two women to the same level, destroying both their families. While Mariam remains passive, Laila refuses to back down, punching Rasheed after he tries to hurt her and ignoring his rules. Up until the miscarriage, Rasheed was kind to Mariam and treated her well, and held the hope that she would bring him a son, the ultimate desire of the men in the novel.
