The Book Thief Style Analysis

In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak the theme words are powerful is illuminated through many different style’s of writing. Writing style is what makes an author’s piece of literature unique. This book follows girl name Liesel who’s life story is being narrated through death during her time of despair. Zusak uses the theme words are powerful to illuminate irony, object symbolism, and allegory as a style of writing. An element of style is irony,the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Throughout the novel death and Mein Kampf show examples of this. Death’s thoughts about humans shows irony. Death closes the novel stating “ i’m haunted by humans”(Zusak …show more content…
A story that shows allegory is the word shaker. The word shaker is about a tree that is growing in a forset of hate but is full of hope. The tree full of hope can’t be cut down or destroyed by soldiers. In the book the word shaker it states “soon, the demand for the lovely ugly words and symbols increased to such a point that as forest grew, many people were needed to maintain them”(Zusak 446). Hatred spreads quickly and with the power of words it is easier. Most people dont know what they are doing with the words but when ou use them you are strengthening the hate. Another deeping meaning in the word shaker is the tree of Hope. NO one could knpck down the tree of hope not even soldiers “days passed. Weeks took over. A hundred and ninety-six soldiers could not makeany impact in the word shaker’s tree”( Zusak 447). The tree is hope and hitler and his troops are trying to knock words helped Hitler rise to power. He planted words and images into the minds of many people, and from these words came symbols, and from these symbols came hate. Allegory is the final style of writing and is shown through the word
