Obedience or Resistance In the story “Astronomer 's Wife”, astronomer is the father figure, the plumber acts like the mother figure, and astronomer’s wife, Mrs Ames, represents the child figure in the story. Undoubtedly, astronomer has all father figure’s traits. Although there is no direct description of him, through his wife, Mrs Ames, I can see an acrimonious husband who takes dominance over his wife and controls her under his custody. Just like story says, “the day would proceed from this, beat by beat, without reflection, like every other day” (Boyle 1).…

The traditional hero’s journey begins with a calling, the hero is drawn to certain circumstances in which they must decide whether or not to accept the quest. However, the feminine journey differs, instead the protagonist determines there is something about their life that must change, and only they themselves, through their own free will, can resolve it. Characters such as Alba, Fa Mulan/ Kingston, and Rahel take the challenge to tackle their deepest psychological issues while simultaneously confronting the patriarchy and political corruption. These female authors successfully preserve the female voice and challenge patriarchal culture through their use of mystical realism (Jenkins). Beginning with The God of Small Things, the vulnerable…

In Silko’s “Ceremony,” women are associated with the birthing and the rebirth of man-kind and nature. In many cases, the creation of man-kind and nature has been directly linked to a higher power of God, so in a sense, women are the equivalent of a sort of spiritual hero. We seem to grasp a strong sense of the all-powerful female role by the strong feminist theme that Silko introduces us to upon the opening of the text when she recounts a native poem, “Ts’its’nako, Thought-Woman, is sitting in her room and whatever she thinks about appears. She thought of her sisters… and together they created the Universe this world and the four worlds below. Thought Woman, the spider, named things and as she named them they appeared.”…

In the Novel Under A Cruel Star, Heda Margolius Kovaly sheds light on the repercussions of not only the German concentration camps in World War 2, but also shows how the War led to the adoption, practice, and repercussions of a hostile communist government. In this novel courage, not only in a power to survive, but in a power to provide for family, is the most prevalent issue brought about in Hedas retelling of her time in the concentration camps and her time as wife to a communist official. One of the most endearing facts about Heda in her retelling of her experiences is that fact how despite everything that she had observed, participated in, and been subjected to she still remained “human” in that she was not misguided by hate and anger but…
