Stuyvesant's Big Sib Program

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.
This style of leadership prevailed when I earned leadership positions. One of my favorite activities is being a volunteer leader in the national honor society. When I organize a volunteer event, I am rewarded in knowing that I am spreading my enthusiasm for helping others and bringing people together. It is the small, intimate moments between myself and the volunteers I value the most.
After joining the Events Committee, I realized that bringing volunteers together could allow me to impact the causes I cared about on a grander scale. I decided to create the Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) club at my …show more content…
Leading an organization of 170 members was a difficult task in itself, but being handed the trust of the incoming freshmen, and having control over their first high school experience was intimidating. Never having led such a large group, it required a new dimension of leadership to make sure that the entire organization was always on board with the program’s aspirations of welcoming the freshmen to Stuyvesant’s vibrant community and guiding them throughout the year. I found myself having to be more assertive and organized. And although it was a sudden change from the more intimate style of leadership I was used to, it was thrilling to have such a great impact on my school’s community. I expanded the program to work more closely with the Student Union, introduced a one-on-one meeting system between the Big Sibs and the freshmen, and developed the Big Sib
