Stuyvesant's Big Sib Program

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. This style of leadership prevailed when I earned leadership positions. One of my favorite activities is being a volunteer leader in the national honor society. When I organize a volunteer event, I am rewarded in knowing that I am spreading my enthusiasm for helping others and bringing people together. Never having led such a large group, it required a new dimension of leadership to make sure that the entire organization was always on board with the program’s aspirations of welcoming the freshmen to Stuyvesant’s vibrant community and guiding them throughout the year. I found myself having to be more assertive and organized. And although it was a sudden change from the more intimate style of leadership I was used to, it was thrilling to have such a great impact on my school’s community. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” As my final days of high school are coming to a close, I’ve come to recognize, like President Kennedy, that leadership and learning go hand in hand. Learning shapes how you lead as a person, and I can attest to that through my senior year in the Montour Spartan Marching Band. This marching band season, I applied and became the section leader for the flutes and piccolos.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Throughout my adolescence and teenage years I would come across multiple opportunities to demonstrate a position of leadership, but I would be discouraged to do so. The reason for this is because during those years of my life I was fixated on other people’s strengths and less of mine own. Which influenced me to believe that I was neither a contributor nor a leader, so to speak. Triumphantly, this mindset of mine changed as I entered college and discovered a whole new identity of my self. This paper will discuss some of the strengths and behaviors that I possess, as well as interjecting the feedback from others in the survey process.…
