Unhelpful thoughts and feelings can interfere with stuttering therapy because it makes it impossible to make changes. When a child has unhelpful thinking patterns such as they are not trying hard enough, are not smart enough, their tools don’t work, or that stuttering is bad, this can affect their progress in therapy. It is important for a clinician to determine why the child is not progressing and not following through with techniques, and it can often be because of these thoughts/feelings in their head. When we encounter feelings or situations we are not comfortable with, it is common to avoid those feelings/situations. Avoidance plays a role in the interference of thoughts and feelings with stuttering therapy since people tend to avoid
