When dealing with an individual with a disability, it’s important to validate their feelings and concerns. The teenage years are a time of searching for their identity, however, those with stuttering face more obstacles when trying to fit in socially. Throughout their life, they most likely have heard demeaning things shaming stuttering such as lack of future success and inability to fit in. Misconceptions about stuttering include being bound to an isolated lifestyle, anxiety as the ultimate cause of their stuttering, the reasoning of their stuttering falling on themselves and lack of effort, and the shame that must be felt because they don’t speak “correctly” have been popularized.
