It is often times a result of psychological or emotional trauma. Children who are subject to abuse and neglect may develop psychogenic stuttering. Neurogenic stuttering occurs when there is damage to the CNS (central nervous system) (Krader 24). This type of stuttering is least common, but not impossible among children. Research for Neurogenic stuttering is often times linked to head injuries, medication, and even disease (Krader 24). Lastly, developmental stuttering, the most evident among children is primarily linked to genetics, but due to a lack of research, it is unclear which genes are effected and how environmental factors may cloud the evidence. (Krader 24). Determining the type of stuttering a child is experiencing will best determine the type of treatment, if any, necessary for further speech development. Hudson Valley Speech and Swallowing therapy seems as if it would be a great place for a concerned parent to start because they are able to provide “individualized treatment plans” to anyone, including children that suffer with communication problems. A little further from the Hudson Valley, but a wonderful source of information for parents and caregivers would be the American Institute for stuttering. Although I specifically looked for an article from the SUNY Orange library, AIS, located in Manhattan exists to provide information about stuttering, treatments options for both children and adults, and learning opportunities for pre-professionals.
