Stupid Decisions Lead to Impulsive Actions
My friend Austin Cope and I attended the girls’ softball tournament last year during spring break. After the game was over Olivia, Mary, Maddy, Cope and I were standing around talking and we decided that we were going to go out to eat at Chilis’. We were all in different cars so we were going to meet somewhere to drop off the cars and all ride together. Cope needed to get gas so I went to the gas station with him and when he was done, he had the great idea to race to the meeting point. I do not even know why I listened to Cope, but I did.

We drove around and found good parking spots. Then I saw the angry couple pulls into the gas station that is in front of the car wash. What a coincidence that they would show up at the same place we are at. First I was worried, but then they drove straight past us. I calmed down and stopped worrying. Then out of nowhere they came speeding back and parked behind us so we could not back out. The husband rolled down his window and started yelling. Cope decides to joke around and with a big smile on his face says “No I didn’t it was him,” gesturing towards me. The husband did not like that at all. He began screaming and using profane language. Cope leaned back in his car which for some reason made the guy really upset. The husband yells “Oh you want to fight!” at Cope. When he opened his door and started walking over to our trucks. His wife was screaming at him to get back in the car. We immediately rolled up our windows as he got to our trucks. The husband was furious! He was screaming saying that we could have hit them and they had kids. He then hit Cope’s window. I was freaked out by this. His wife was calling for him to just come back and stay in the car. Cope rolled his window down a little bit to try and talk to the guy. The husband would not calm down. He then threatened to shoot us. His exact words were “If I had my gun on me right now I would blow y’all’s brains in!” At this point I was about to through my truck into drive and hop the curb in front of me. I was going to get out of there. The husband eventually stormed off back to his

Decision making refers to mental processing which leads to the selection of one choice, among several alternatives (Beach, 1993). Currently there is no consensus as to whether decision making occurs unconsciously or consciously. Dijksterhuis (2004) define conscious thought to be a mental state which surrounds awareness; while unconscious thought, a reasoning which occurs while conscious attention is allocated elsewhere (Dijksterhuis & Nordgren, 2006). The deliberation-without-attention effect explains that unconscious processes are adequately suited for optimal decision making, as it is able to integrate large amounts of information; in comparison to consciousness which is driven by schemas and expectancies (Dijksterhuis, Bos, Nordgren & Van Baaren 2006). Despite these claims, decision making is still highly controversial with researchers (Payne, Samper, Bettman & Luce, 2008) suggesting there is no difference in decision quality between unconscious and conscious processes.…
