Studying Scripture: Scompole In Christian Discipline

Improved Essays
Studying Scripture is a tentpole in Christian Discipline. The Bible is one of the truest ways in which God has chosen to reveal himself to his people. It reveals his character. It shows us how to live, as Jesus said, “ A life to the fullest.” It is not a dead book of works and laws. Scripture is living, life changing and takes a lifetime to enjoy. As students of scripture we need to have an understanding of scriptures authority, inerrancy and how it was written to us. The Bible has complete authority upon itself and our lives. Authority, the right and power to command, enforce laws, exact obedience, determine or judge, is innate for scripture. The logic follows as this. We understand that Scripture is written by God. God has supreme authority. …show more content…
Much like God has complete authority, God is also Truth. This is not saying that God only tells the truth, the very nature of who God is is truth. God cannot be apart of untruth. Therefore, his very words must also always be true. Second, Scripture itself calls itself truth. Jesus himself said “ Sanctify them in the Truth; your word is truth”. Scripture being God’s word, meaning it cannot be untruthful, calls itself truth. Therefore, Truth says that scripture is truth. This argument is part of what we all the Biblical Argument of Inerrancy. It is easily the strongest argument for the inerrancy of scripture. On the other end of the spectrum we have the Slippery Slope Argument of Inerrancy. This argument simply says that those who give up the idea, will give up all of their Christian Doctrine. This is absurd. The Inerrancy of Scripture is important, but it is not the most important thing. There are many Christ following Christians that are full of love and truth that do not agree with the belief that the Bible is Inerrant. This view also gets close to the view of “ Bible Worship.” No where in Scripture does it say that the one hundred percent agreement with scripture makes you a christian. That is through faith in Christ

As Michael Brown states in What They Don’t Tell you: A Survivor’s Guide to Biblical Studies: a Bible study focuses more on helping people to either understand what God wants in their life or how to be a better Christian. Sometimes Bible study helps solidify theological beliefs, or to develop new theological beliefs. As Brown stated, Bible study is often more of a mid week worship than a scholarly breakdown of the Bible. On the other hand, Biblical study differs from Sunday School because you study more than just the Bible itself. You study the historical context, such as the political climate, economics of the time, laws of the time, etc.…

The Word is inspired by God and is beneficial to us for teaching, correction, reproofing, and for training us in righteousness.…

If humanity did not have scripture, everyone would be without certainty. People would be able to know some truths, like there is a God, and they are accountable to Him, but they would be missing the Gospel. Deuteronomy 29:29 says “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law”. God has given us scripture and made us accountable to it. We must look to it for wisdom.…

Now more than ever, the world is more closely connected through the nearly-instantaneous exchange of ideas and information. This exchange of ideas means that collaboration for the advancement of knowledge on a particular subject is possible and facilitates advancements in that field. On the other hand, having access to the abundance of contrasting ideas also means that people have more to think about and more they can argue about. One of said arguments is whether the Bible is really trustworthy. There are too many different beliefs about the Bible to list them all, but some of the main ones are that the Bible is the word of God and true and trustworthy, the Bible is just a book written by man and, therefore, vulnerable to the weaknesses of any human-written work and fallible, or that the Bible is mostly true but has some inaccuracies, thus casting doubt as to whether it is inspired by God.…
