My Observation In The Math Classroom

Improved Essays
The goal of this project is to learn how to study students and their learning. I was placed in a third grade class at Carl Cozier and learned a lot from my learning partner as well as many other students in the class. I spent about half of the day with my LP and the majority of the time spent together was in the classroom setting. The six things I observed about my LP include her physical presence, relationships with others, activities and interests, modes of thinking and learning, strengths and assets, and vulnerabilities. To begin, I observed my LP’s physical presence. I noticed that she is very much an extrovert and loves attention. Throughout my time in the classroom, I noticed she enjoys when the spotlight is on her, whether it be for …show more content…
She is quite organized, making sure her things are always organized. Each student in the class has their own notebook for the different subjects, and hers is very clean and clearly laid out. This helps make it easier to read and navigate through the notebook. This asset noticeably sets a good example for the other students in the class. My LP is also very creative. The class had a few sections of art and she was able to relax and create some amazing work. This creativity also was clear in math. One time during a math lesson she was not completely understanding the way the teacher was demonstrating things. So, she figured out how to apply something she already knew to the new concept which worked really well. It was very cool to see her use her prior knowledge to get through something she did not fully understand at …show more content…
She noticed that she could often get what she wanted if she was impolite and demanding. The supportive teaching move I implemented was holding her accountable for her actions. If she was disrespectful to me or another student I would ask her to think about her actions and how she could say something differently. Then I would ask her to make things right by apologizing. The outcome that I observed was an improvement in behavior around me. When I was across the room, sometimes I could hear her saying unkind things, and I am confident that it is because no one was there to remind her to think before she speaks. I think a more affective long-term supportive teaching move would be a deeper conversation about how our actions affect others. I wish I would have had more time to talk with her about these issues, and I hope my little talks with her helped somewhat long term. Overall, this project really helped me reflect on my impact on my LP and her impact on me. I learned so much about how to study students and their learning. This skill will be essential when I have my own classroom, and I truly appreciate this project for this

The idea behind my project is to show how the aphorisms were always running through Morrie's mind. I drew a silhouette of Morrie and filled it with aphorisms that stood out to me. I did this to show that Morrie, himself, came up with these aphorisms, and not someone else. Morrie used the aphorisms to teach and get a point across in a way that is easy to understand. My project is another tool to help get Morrie's many messages read.…

I learned to make my room mine, and to be creative even if that means that my room stands out from the others. I learned to be creative when books and lectures don’t get the point across. I just loved her use of music and dance to teach math, which will be something I use in my own classroom. I think the most important thing that I learned to do would be to bring love in, no matter how hard a day may be for me, it may be two times as hard for the children as well. Showing those kids love in the classroom may be the only time they get it, everyone deserves a safe place.…

She mentioned that in the beginning of the year she made sure that the students followed instructions and worked independently. She used the technique of speaking very softly and nicely to the students. She established excellent rapport with her students. That has allowed her to work with her students as a facilitator instead of having to do much discipline to get their attention. I was able to notice that the 4th and 5th grade teachers were very disciplinary.…

I borrowed my mom’s wheelchair one day, not only to do this project, but also because I had to get an injection in my knee for the first time and the doctor hit a nerve and had to do it twice and told me to stay off my foot the rest of the day. It was a challenging experience for me to get around in a wheelchair and do my daily activities. I had to cook dinner for the family.…

When a teacher decides to approach the classroom, knowing there will be behavior issues but they choose to evaluate themselves first that is when the teacher and student will see the most success. The method of applying change to yourself as a teacher verses placing the change on the student is one I feel I will struggle with and one that will need lots of practice. I agree that no one can be forced to change, that is seen over and over again throughout life. However, I don’t think that a teacher should have to change herself to respond to one child. Providing the support and positivity to spark a change in the student is crucial because these are items that greatly influence a child.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…

Also taking away their free time because they were very talkative a day in class. Students will learn by example and this will modify their behavior. Positive and negative consequences will vary behavior but creating an intervention plan with bad students will help them understand and slowly monitor progress. During my field experience I have noticed that my cooperative teacher has taken away fun activities/ labs in class because of the way that students were behaving and this has shown a positive impact on their behavior in future classes because the teacher follows thru with what she says she will do if they do not behave. The ultimate goal of my classroom management is not to manage control of the class but to ensure that everyone meets my expectations in order for them to learn in an effective and supportive environment but to teach students self-discipline and to understand the rules and consequences of my classroom by acting accordingly.…
