Personal Narrative: A Career In Higher Management

Improved Essays
An assumption I have been going by is that I will never be able to start my own company. Along the same thinking I also assume that I will never be able to become a CEO or high level manager. The idea got into my head around sophomore year in high school. Around this time is when I settled into the idea that I wanted to be a business major and started to pursue classes in human resources and management. I would often accompany my dad to his job where he oversees several hundred people. There I saw the amount of responsibility and tasks that he had to do each day. At the time all of it was very overwhelming to me, I didn’t really understand the structure and flow of the organization. Once I got started college I worked for a company as an IT specialist and often talked with the president of the company. I learned quickly that managing an entire company required a lot of knowledge and skill. Skills and knowledge I didn’t think I had or would …show more content…
The belief that I would be incapable of higher management would limit my options after graduations or later on in my career. Having this belief while being perfectly capable of higher management is illogical now. After reflecting on this theory I realize how far I have come since the idea first manifested itself. Looking back with a different perspective to when I met with CEO’s and high level managers it reveals itself to be invaluable learning experiences. In the past I have passed up opportunities to shadow or intern under managers which I now regret and in the future will jump at that opportunity. As for creating my own company after reflecting on that I still want to do it at some point but I can admit my own weakness in that area. It would be a decision I would have to make later in life after gaining a lot of experience and knowledge. At least now I know it’s not a matter of I can’t do it, it’s a matter of I don’t know enough to do

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Over the years, I have learned that growing up in a family business atmosphere has carved me to who I am today. Growing up, every semester break or public holiday, I would always attend to work at my father's pizzeria to help out and learn about the business. I have learned that managing is all about coping with diversity and complexity. As I grew older, I was given a managerial role of being a supervisor at work. Being the eldest daughter in the family, my father placed a big responsibility on me to learn inside and outside of the business.…

An internship is normally a work task a student completes after a series of classes to gain a degree in a particular field they think they’ll love, whether they still love it after they’ve completed that journey is based upon a multitude of criteria. Luckily, I have found that I quite enjoy fashion and working in retail throughout this internship at Dress Barn. Occasionally students find that what they thought they were getting into, is actually completely different than what they expected. Especially when reading about a profession on paper versus seeing it up closer in real life. When I started college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study or achieve with my life.…

I am sure that I am not the only person in the world that is not sure what their future may hold, however, at this point I feel that I should have more of an idea than I currently do. Another weakness that I feel I have is that I do not often talk to people in the workplace about their personal or spiritual issues. I feel that those type of things should be kept personal, especially with something that is spiritual, because I feel that it is a matter of opinion and preference. However, being a manager includes connecting with people on a personal level so I feel that having this skill is essential to being an effective manager. A third weakness that I have is that I do not agree with the belief that one must sacrifice their beliefs and values for the sake of the company or for their career.…

Growing up I have always dreamed of starting my business and managing every detail in it, I started studying the most famous businesses and what the imperfections in these businesses are, just to make sure that in the future if I do start my business, I do not make these mistakes.
