Study Hall Era Research Paper

I have been in high school for over three years now, and in those three years I have never had a study hall period. The four years you are in high school are the most tedious, stressful, yet very important years of your life before college. Over forty-five percent of high school students have part time jobs, or participate in University Interscholastic League (U.I.L.). As a student athlete I spend seven hours at school, three hours at practice, and up to two and a half hours on homework each day. Imagine how much time I would save each day if we were granted a study hall period just once a day. I am sure many other students can agree that after school and practice it is extremely hard to have the strength to do homework. When in high school …show more content…
In high school we are getting ready for our futures each day which means that we should have special help. By special help I mean we should be granted tutoring during school for those who cannot attend after school. When we have class meetings, or pep rallies we have to miss an entire class period of precious learning because we do not have a free study hall period to lean on. There is so much good high school students can gain from a study hall period. In my three years of high school I know I have struggled each day with time management, and strength to do my homework, maintain my sport, and get proper rest. Imagine what a single study hall period once a day can do to someone’s education, and success. To conclude my paper, I bring back the question “Many high school schedules include a study hall period several times a week. Is study hall a waste of time OR a necessary break from class?” Again I certainly agree that study hall is the break, or extra piece of assistants a student needs to be successful. There are hundreds of reasons why a student will benefit from a study hall period. Overall a study hall period is a great thing that should be implemented in high schools around the

Construction of the Concrete Roof of the Assembly Hall The University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign Assembly Hall has been the home of the Illini men’s basketball team for over half a century and has been one of the greatest engineering and architectural feats on campus ever since its creation over half a century ago. Beginning on May 25, 1959, construction of the Assembly Hall was carried out by structural engineers Othmar Ammann and Charles Whitney, general contractor Felmley-Dickerson Co., and architect Max Abramovitz, taking almost four years of construction before its completion on May 3, 1963. The Assembly Hall was an engineering wonder when it was first constructed, as it was the first ever concrete dome arena built and remained to be until the construction of the Astrodome in Houston, Texas two years later. Weighing over 4000 tons from only the roof, the concrete dome of the Assembly Hall spans at a 400 feet diameter, 128 feet tall, and built with a folded plate design in about 3.5 inches in thickness.…

Room 0742 is a studio design room located in king pavilion at the Iowa State University college of design. In a way it represents the beginning of my journey at Iowa State, for it is the first class room I had ever been in as a student, and its represents hours and hours of hard work and dedication to my major. It is a rather bittersweet place with times where it became a place to put my work on display as well as a place to spend many long nights and very early mornings working and developing. The space itself physically is not a room by traditional means it has no doors and stall like walls that rise above the ground six to eight inches as well as an opening at the top.…

The first day of the Ohio State Fair had visitors smiling faces turn into the look of terror within seconds as they watched a ride break apart right before their eyes. According to WCPO, the "Fire Ball" ride cracked while riders were on it throwing their bodies at least 20-30 feet into the air as they were ejected from the ride as it was swinging and spinning around. Terrified witnesses watched as the riders slammed to the concrete ground. Dr. David Evans of OSU Medical Center explained "multiple passengers were ejected at high speed" then "crashed at a significant distance from the ride." ABC News reports 18-year-old Columbus, Ohio, resident Tyler Jarrell, lost his life when he was flung into the air while malfunctioning ride fell apart.…

I am currently enjoying my senior year here at California High School. Although I consider many of my classes to be easy here, the weight of all of this year's homework is already being felt. It is my firm belief that for the sake of our students, a study hall is needed. More than 70% of students in our school are involved in extracurricular activities. I am currently involved in Boy Scouts, band, drumline, youth group, spanish club, math team, academic team, FBLA and also have a part-time job as a bagboy at Cal’s Thriftway to provide the money to save up for college and drive to school to go to all of the club meetings and practices.…

After lots of research I decided that we shouldn’t have the same classes 5 days a week and that some classes we don’t need as many years as we get. What I figured out is that we shouldn't have the same classes all 5 days each week but should instead change it up like they do in college. Colleges have found this helps lighten the homework load and make students feel better about it. After I thought of this I also thought do Chem, History, Gym, English, Math, and a foreign language really need as much time as we put into it. After I did lot of research I learned that the majority such as math and history don't and that they should actually have more of gym and some music classes…

In particular, we discussed page 33 and the similarities between Miss Mancel and Mrs. Morgan’s relationship. We also talked about page 35, and Scott’s depiction of Sir Charles. A high school student walks through a narrow hallway bustling with rushing kids; however, her mind is far away being chased by plaguing responsibilities. Her thoughts whirl around in the back of her head constantly ticking through what she believes are the worst possibilities. She ponders of failing a test, not getting into the best high school, not having enough time to study, not completing all her homework, and not meeting the expectations of her parents. Her mind constantly just worries as if can no longer fathom relaxation. On the outside she keeps a blank expression and walks on; the student avoids meeting the eyes of the other students also competing in the game of "who can get into the best college and make his/her parents proud".…

Now, I know in my Latin class that if I miss 10 minutes of class time, I miss my opportunity to do the warm up that would count as a quiz grade in the future. If you have a test in a class, though, and you miss the first 10-15 minutes of class time, that was time that you could’ve used to take the test. Instead, you’d have to wait in line to get your name on the hall sweep list during that 10-15 minutes. Hall sweeps waist valuable time. Not only do students miss quizzes, warm ups, or test time, but also class instructions.…

Of course this shuts students down because who would want to study for a whole day straight? There is also a problem with students who never seem to fail. According to Paul Tough in his article “What if the Secret to Success is Failure?”, “People who have an easy time of things, get 800’s on their SAT’s….I think as a result, we are actually setting them up for long-term failure” (Tough, Nytimes.com). This is meaning that people who don’t see failure and do excellently won’t have the capacity to handle the real life failures because they have things come easily to them. This is worse than a student who refuses to show their failures because they are scared of being humiliated.…

Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
