There are many things that you might do in America that would be considered disrespectful in Thailand. Making the wrong decision could even lead to time spent in jail. Some having a punishment up to “fifteen years” in prison (Isvolunteers, 1). This section of the guide will give you insight on the differences and what not to do and also what to do.
One difference between your culture and Thailand is parenting goals. Growing up surrounded by American culture we are taught from a young age to do things by ourselves. We are often told you cannot depend on anyone but yourself. Parents are put into the category of teaching their children “independence” in America (Pomerantz and Deng, 127). Well this is not the case for Thailand. Thailand teaches their kids the opposite such as “interdependence, collective achievement, sharing, and collaboration” (Johnson, Radesky, and Zuckerman, 1). This will be a change since we are taught from a very young age to be independent. Now you will have to learn to work as a group because this is what they will be used to. Also in Thailand it is known that in each house hold there will be “three generations” living together (Tapanya, 1). This is so they can work together as a group to help raise the children. Women work just like men do in Thailand. In fact so many women work that they represent over “half the workforce” (Commisceo Global Consultancy, 2017). Women in America accounted for “47 percent” of the work force (U.S. Department of Labor, 2017). Almost the same amount of women that are working in America are allowed to work in Thailand.
