My name is Reid Dykhuizen, I am a nineteen year old male, from West Point, Indiana. I am majoring in Business Administration. I am the son of Troy and Melissa Dykhuizen. I was born in Lafayette, Indiana, and have one sister, Morgan. A life long dream of mine has always been to be an ambassador in Australia as part of an exchange program. I am interested in doing a study abroad for several different reasons. One of the greatest opportunities a student can be offered is a chance to study overseas before you graduate college. Studying abroad will give me the chance to see the world. I would get to experience a brand new country and have new outlooks, customs, and activities. I would get to experience different styles of education, and maybe …show more content…
Since I would be in another country, my family would not be there to support me. I would be living with a host family that provides a house for me. I would not have my siblings, parents, grandparents, cousins, and aunts and uncles there. I would have to take care of all of my physical and mental needs. I would be able to really study and see excitement I have never seen before. I would be able to recognize another culture and appreciate it more, also my problem solving skills. Being able to experience all of this while studying abroad will advance me in my career as a Business Admin. Another great quality of being able to study abroad would be to make lifelong friends. Living with a host family for a whole year of school may seem like a long time, and it is, but it is also a great opportunity to make some lifelong friends that you may even want to call your second family and get to experience their ways of living. My host family would be providing me three meals a day, my own bed, a supportive environment for me to be able to study, and help me participate in community activities. My host family would be able to show me around the area and familiarize me with the town we are in. They would help me being able to adapt to the environment and culture of Australia. They would be with me more than eighty percent of the time, minus me being in school. My host family, in my opinion would be my second family. We would be really close and knowing the person that I am, I would keep in contact with them frequently. It would be a great opportunity for me to gain new friends from a different culture and be able to experience my culture and their culture

By going abroad and having absorbed different landscapes, cultures, and values, I am able to analyze more complex problems and find new ways to solve them. I moved to Guatemala, where I first had a notion of life preservation through the Mayans, the Native Indian tribes. I went to reservations to provide assistance to the people and see the Mayan pyramids and was given a lecture by a leader of the community, who taught me about Mayan history and traditions as well as natural preservation, geography, and architecture. Being in this country, I learn how to appreciate other cultures and by being surrounded by beautiful landscapes I learned more about being aware of the world around me.…

Once I moved away, I started understanding my culture, and I started letting go of the typical stereotypes and false beliefs. Traveling helped me to get to know myself better. Once I moved back to Nebraska, it was hard hanging out with my best friend who has lived in the same town all her life, and hardly ever traveled outside of the state, nor did she have the desire too. She constantly judged people by their actions, race, income, or family situation because she was used to being around white, middle class, Christian families. It’s important to educate yourself to understand the diversity of society.…
