At the age of 6, I moved to the United States and attended schools here while accustoming to the American life. To my surprise, I later learn that the city of Garden Grove is not really a representative of the United States, but that is another story for another day. Ever since, the United States has become my home. Throughout the years, I have grown tremendously: intellectually, emotionally and may be a bit physically. Nonetheless, my parents, teachers/professors, and friends have shown me who I am capable of becoming for my communities and myself; however, the direction is still uncertain at the moment. Throughout the past years, I have found little clues of things I care for and wish to achieve. I have discovered my adventurous self through study abroad where I have met supportive …show more content…
These experiences truly pave the path I am currently pursuing. As a student studying in Psychology and Informatics majors, I want to examine the interplay of people and technology and what it means for our collective future, especially in education. My current options are to go to graduate school to pursue a Master in Information Science, to enter industry to directly give back to my community of low-income, ethnic minority students right away, or to teach abroad to further develop my skill as an educator. A Doctorate degree is definitely not out of the equation, but I would like to pursue it at a later

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

I was born in Africa and moved to America at the age of two. Little did I know that that single move would cause my life to meet the people I would meet and the opportunities that I would encounter. Once I came to America, my family and I moved to New Mexico so my father could complete his Ph.D. in mathematics. There two of my three younger brothers were born but New Mexico was only my backstory. At the end of my first-grade year, my family and I moved to Texas which was where I finally understood what I had been taught by parents: be kind, chose your words carefully, and work hard in everything.…

But then as I have growing up, I realized that she sacrificed to stay there, so my dad can take care of me better. Remember the first day I went to an American middle school, I was clueless, difficulty in communication and the people around me have different cultures, and ethnicity. When in Vietnam, I felt so confident and proud of myself, but in United States, I started isolating people, I felt inferior and started developing a shell to cover myself from the world.…

I identify as a Vietnamese-American, however, this was never the case. It was almost ironic how strongly I identified with American culture when my family’s time spent in America was fairly new. Since my parents traveled to America after the Vietnam War in the 1980’s, my siblings and I are the first American-born generation. I grew up as an American, so I quickly found out that I had no knowledge of the Vietnamese culture, language, or history. As a transfer student from a community college my time at my new institution is limited, and as a STEM major, there is a need to accrue as much time in a lab as possible to increase the prospects of admittance into a graduate program. With so much to do in the allotted time the idea of studying abroad simply did not cross my mind, however, it was not until several failed attempts at receiving into a summer internship that I began to turn my attention elsewhere. Despite my initial plans not coming to fruition, I decided that the best way to make the most of the upcoming summer would be to take additional classes over the summer. I had accepted the fact that I would be taking classes over the summer, but if I was going to do so I at least wanted to make the most of the situation and take classes somewhere else. Eventually, after exploring the various programs available through the UC system I came across the study abroad programs.…
