Study abroad is a term long program, usually run by a university, that allows students to live in a foreign country and attend a foreign university. The number of US students participating in Study Abroad programs has grown between 1997 and 2007, the number of participants grew from under 100,000 to 250,000. Participants of study abroad programs continued its growth in 2011-2012 grew to 283,332. By following this trend in the amount of participants is expected to increase and the Institute for International Education Generation Study Abroad, established in 2014, has predicted the number to be 600,000 by the 2017- 2018 academic year. The purpose of this Literature review is to signal to the reader how study abroad is beneficial to all college students ' development. The scholars make it a point to say that the study abroad programs offered at universities are expanding and participation by students is increasing. Also stated, is professors that wish that their students who are excluded by their major from studying abroad to have a program that allows them to go abroad. One field study by a scholar reveals the positively affects the student 's life afterward mainly with job opportunities. According to some scholars, study abroad fosters individual growth beyond an intellectual standpoint.
