Study Abroad Debate Essay

Studying abroad is an opportunity that many college students wish to take part in during their college career. “Room for Debate” asks the question of if it is actually worth it. Is it worth the money? Is it enriching the students education? Should studying abroad be mandatory for students? All of these questions are ones that students parents most likely ask them selves before they are willing to dish out the tens of thousands of dollars that it costs to spend a semester or a year abroad. Debaters on “Room for Debate” have a wide range of views. Some feel that a gap year is more beneficial to students while others believe that there is no way a student should leave college without studying in another country. Chin has a polar opposite view on studying abroad. He argues that is costly and not worth the time. Chin chooses to have a more rational view on the topic. He discusses how it is not probable for many students. Chin draws a parallel to how students should do community service and visit Washington D.C. He talks about how these are good additions to a students education, but it is not realistic nor will it be apart of every students education. He believes that there should be more of a focus on the monetary gap between the kids who have the money to study abroad versus those who do not. Chin goes on to say that studying abroad is more of a “good time” than an education enrichment. Chin does understand how curtail it is to have cultural experiences and how globalized the economy is. He just does not see studying abroad as a way to connect American students to the global society. Furthermore, he goes onto say how American students need to study english. He thinks that instead of trying to learn more languages, students should perfect one. These views show that Chin is a realistic thinker and believes that America needs to fix themselves before branching out into the
