Theoretical construct Based upon analysis of previous research, it is evident that research into compassion is less prevalent than compassion fatigue (Kagen, 2014). According to Gilbert (2005), compassion can be divided into two parts: 1) a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune and 2) a strong desire to help stop the suffering. The desire to help stop the suffering is what separates compassion from empathy. A plethora of research has identified that compassion is reduced when a person is continuously exposed to compassion inducing stimuli, known as compassion fatigue (Conrada & Kellar-Guentherb, 2006).…
The author pointed out a high spike in loneliness in 2013. Unhappiness and loneliness leads to depression and this shocking fact: eighth-graders with heavy social media use “increase their risk of depression by 27 percent” (Twenge 10). As noted by Marshall and Rossman (2016), member checking is the process of sharing a one to two-page summary outlining a synthesis of the initial interpretations of the data, to clarify any misinterpretations. According to Houghton, Casey, Shaw, and Murphy (2013), member checking serves as a tool to ensure the proper meanings of interpretations are correct. Member checking also gives researchers the opportunities to gain new insights from participants, who can justifiably augment, clarify, or refute the initial interpretations (Anney, 2014). I will use member a member checking process to help mitigate bias and enrich the study. Sotiriadou et al.…
