Placing a student with disabilities in a regular education classroom can create a stimulating environment for that student rather than the special education classroom. By being put in a regular education classroom the student will be able to engage in more instructional time and have more exposure to academic activities, which will hopefully lead to greater academic success. Regular education students who can help further their communication, social and adaptive behaviors. The regular students can provide examples of appropriate behavior for the special education student to learn from. Making new friends and sharing new experiences is another benefit of inclusion. Students with disabilities are able to have friendships with peers their same age. There are also pitfalls of inclusion for students with disabilities. For example, their socialization part of their education could take priority over the academic part of their education. Another disadvantage is the fact that some students need the special education classroom in order to obtain the maximum benefit of their education. In this setting they have more one-on-one time with the teacher and there are less distractions in the smaller class room. In a regular classroom, students with disabilities might have low self esteem and feel depressed, overwhelmed and inadequate compared to their non-disabled peers, because they are able to see what their peers can do …show more content…
They have the right to participate in all decision making meetings which are held in order to determine an IEP for their child. They have the write to a written notice if there any changes in identification, evaluation, or educational placement by the school. Parents have the right to provide written consent for the special education IEP before the assessment process. They have the right to access educational records. They can request a hearing in case there are any complaints in regards to the FAPE. Parents have the right to agree or disagree with any proposals that are presented to change their child’s placement. They also have the right to find a voluntary impartial mutual person to help find the best solution regarding the child’s special education IEP. Lastly, parents have the right to any information on any disciplinary action. Parents are an important role in the IEP team and should be able to participate in the progress of their child’s education and performance. If disciplinary action needs to take place, then the parents should be included in what is taking
