Reflection About Education

Many people say that the best way you will get to know the problems of the education system is by asking kids; in fact, that is the most effective way. Education reporter Amanda Ripley took her time to find answers to why the United States was performing low in education. She received her answers, not only from statistical data, but from students themselves. Those students joined the exchange program and simply pointed out the differences from those schools in top performing countries to schools in the United States. As a student myself, I believe there are a few things that are in need of reform. Students should be taught basic life skills before they graduate high school and should be taught to think in order to increase their performance …show more content…
We are currently taught to memorize. We are being taught to learn certain skills in a certain subject because it will be on a big test that will benefit the state. That is one of the main problems in the education system; students are not being taught to think. In every grade, I was taught the objectives that the state of California provided for the teachers to teach in the school year; not once did I learn to create something on my own. When the talk of common core came up, everyone knew it would be a hard transition because we were being taught to regurgitate information instead of coming up with something from scratch. Knowing and understanding are two completely different things, two things that are being tossed around in classrooms. Cheryl Hollinger, a 17 year AP biology high school teacher, believes that the problem in which students can’t actually understand a concept is because the material in books are overwhelming and are way too big to go into depth. She commented, “Students go through the motions of their lab assignments without grasping why, and the exam is largely a vocabulary test." This is due to the education system wanting the students to have content knowledge. Content knowledge is not enough in this world that keeps on evolving. Señora Smith, a Spanish teacher I had, told the class that we didn’t need books because books don’t …show more content…
In the documentary Most Likely to Succeed, Salman Khan, founder of Khan Academy, claimed “... priorities were dictated 124 years ago.” The foundation of the system is too old to still be in use today. There needs to be change to the system to keep up with the changing world that we live in. Everything is growing in all different aspects. There is competition in the world today to be the best as there was in the past. “If we can compete with other countries it’s gotta be in producing citizens capable of innovative thinking,” Jed Silverstein, a English/Philosophy teacher, asserted, “not citizens capable of industrial production, not citizens capable of assembling iPads.” The way the system is set up is what some people refer to as a “factory.” The day is divided into blocks where bells ring and students roam around. Students sit and listen in a class just to go to another class where they will sit and listen again; that is repeated several times in a day. School is considered more of an organizational device rather than educational. In order for students to be competitive in the world, they must be in an environment that will strike their creativity. You can’t have students be “factory workers”; students must be given the opportunity to be entrepreneurs to see their ability outside of the “factory” setting. The way school is set up with the requirement of classes should not be

America's standard of public education has fallen into a deep decline over the last decade. School should be better constructed to teach kids how to prepare for adult life and the real world. Many of the things taught today in school have little to no value to students after they graduate. Curriculum should involve very crucial life skills such as people skills, critical thinking, and financial management. Our Education System barely does anything to cater to those needs, which sets kids up for failure later in life.…

I stand before you today to discuss the overuse of standardized testing. Children of these upcoming generations have it engrained in their minds that it is imperative that they prepare themselves for a schooling system with multitudes of tests. Children in these schooling systems are required by law to take standardized tests to represent their currents school. While this is seems beneficial to be funding; parents are not able to perceive how the school and teachers are attempting to construct this into the children’s schedules. Teachers are not only piling on the word for the kids preparing for these tests, but are also forcing all of this knowledge that in a short period of time onto these students.…

My group’s topic for discussion was general education requirements at Penn State University. We used the P-MOPS problem-solving technique to discuss and furthermore decide on a solution to the general education issue. I believe we effectively accomplished our task by providing a legitimate solution that the university could implement to the general education problem. Initially, we did not know each other very well other than being in the same class, so there was a period of socialization.…

Education first started when the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony declared that there should be an elementary school for each town of fifty families in 1647. Additionally for every town with a hundred families or more should have a Latin school. Many children did not go to school because their parents taught that at home using a hornbook, a primer, and a bible. In present day, education everyone is allowed into public schools. However back then, not everyone went to school people like slaves, and that changed in the early 1840s.…

(Fry 3) Why are we still using the same system after all these years? We question our schools, teachers, standards, work ethic and we blame technology, the generational changes, and even ourselves, but could it be that our system is failing because our structure is not a solid as it once was? If a house’s foundation is crumbling, you do not keep remodeling the house in hopes that the structure itself will be repaired, you tear the whole thing down and start over, which is exactly what needs to be done with the American Education System. This would be an extremely long and difficult process and it would affect a lot of different aspects of our everyday lives but without major changes and sacrifices, our system is going to continue to fail. Children were not meant to be locked in a box for eight or more hours a day and be controlled from every angle; they are not prisoners, but that is how they are treated.…

Education today, in my opinion, is not doing what it should be doing to ensure that America is actually living up to what it is known for...the land of opportunities. I believe that education should be about an empowering experience that helps students discover their passions, fosters their critical thinking skills, promotes an environment that accepts diversity, and encourages students to apply to skills to the outside world. This should be he purpose of American public schooling because it will help society adapt to changing times and encourage the growth of a well-rounded, modern, and accepting culture which in the long run help foster peace and equality. I am sure that there are many schools in America that try and foster all of things,…

The number one issues we have in schools are all the pointless classes we are forced to take instead of taking the right classes we need to know when we graduate high school and go off on our own. Why are we being taught these classes when we are not going to use them in our lives in the future it is a waste of time and knowledge there is simply no point. When we graduate high school and go off on our own lots of students have to figure things out on their own it has been said many times it would have been better on learning these things in school instead of taking useless classes they don’t need. We are acknowledging different subjects why don’t they teach us things that are happening in the world now instead of in the past or about the…

Well, Prince Ea, a spoken word poet, uses his YouTube platform to address this. Posting a video titled, “I Just Sued the School System”, Ea provides a depth look at our education system. The video amusingly takes place in a court-room where Prince is standing before a jury, convicting our modern education system of various crimes. He believes that our current system is cookie-cutter: failing to recognize the individuality of students that would help them succeed. Mike Rose in “Blue Collar Brilliance” has similar point-of-views but focuses on the talent of those who might not be the best at school, but have many other talents.…

Each teacher has his or her own method of teaching. No one teacher teaches the same way as another. These methods are manifested in a teacher’s education philosophy, or “the principles that guide professional action. ”(Parkay, 2015, p.114) A teacher creates his or her philosophy by examining his/her beliefs in a variety of categories, like what a teacher’s role should be, what a student’s role should be, and what should be taught.…
