As the chinese old saying goes, ‘learning is the noblest of human pursuits’, majority of the chinese holds belief that knowledge can offer them a new leaf. Gradually, it creates a social phenomenon that only good marks can lead you to a bright future. In order to stand out from the crowd, students work extra hard on studying, some of them even sacrifice their sleeping time. Under such tremendous pressure, students resort to suicide death. It is believed that the exam-oriented education system in Hong Kong may be the reason leading to the rising number of student suicides. However, this may not quite the case. Study is a pressure, but not the first cause, in fact, most of Hong Kong students cannot handle pressure well. At school, teachers focus on how to develop a positive attitude among students, instead of teaching them how to face negative emotions (Cheung, 2017). As a human-being, it is unlikely to have no negative emotions, the most important thing is learn to accept and face them, especially living in a hustle and bustle place like Hong Kong. At the same time, helicopter parents are commonly found in Hong Kong, they pay extra attention to everything of their children, from daily life to their emotional problems. Since everything is taken good care by their parents, children no need to feel anxious or nervous anymore, they gradually lose their ability to live independently. This creates more ‘Tiger Mother’ in the society, they deliberately expase their children to competitive activities without considering the detrimental effects to them. Students are being treated as ‘project’, instead of ‘human’. In order to live up to parents’ expectation, students spend most of their time on studying, which brings them huge pressure. Pressure shares the same principle as rubber band, it snaps when it stretched too hard. Parents should be the one support children the most, when they become the pressure source, students may lose faith to keep going, leading to another tragedy. Lack of communication between parents and students might also contribute to the rising tide of suicide cases.
