Student Services Responsibility

Decent Essays
Student services responsibility goes beyond the basic tasks description of the position. It demands a personal devotion and a real sacrifice. From my lifetime experience, I helped a bunch of students achieve goals that looked impossible at first glance. The latest one was a student from Africa who came to my office desperately. No one seemed to pay attention to her because of her very low level of English. I assisted her step by step and got her properly enrolled. I methodically explained her how things work in a city like New York City. Also, I assisted her in opening a bank account, getting a state ID, and other administrative documents. The student personal service plan should give me a sense of involvement through college; much differently what high school taught me. In high school its good to volunteer to show active participation outside the class; suggested why it’s require to even graduate high school. But volunteering in high school was too vague for me. Don’t get me wrong about volunteering at the food bank in my parish, I like it and it what got me started to exceptionally good things for others who might not be fortunate unlike the rest of us; however, the student personal service plan will help me to specifically focus in community service pertaining to my pathway and career goal. Having this lesson taught is good for me and the rest of my peers to set specific service that best suits them to follow their and my dreams in college and in life…

Yet, it is more important to the upper entourage to keep their rank embedded in power, then to relinquish it to the underserved population they are meant to serve. As a social worker, my role is to relinquish power differentials between myself and the individuals I work with, and so I do the same with students, after all we are all experts at something, are we not? Thus, I do not ‘fit the mold’ and I tarnish the image so valued to be upheld, yet built on a…

When we are young and commit mistakes, it is easy to blame on parents, teachers, or siblings in order to mentally make ourselves feel better about our own fault. In college, I will not be able to blame anybody for missing registration to classes, or missing an important deadline. Taking full responsibility for my actions will give me a hard time in my college career, since I have never been completely by myself. However, without a doubt, acting responsibly is the quality that gives meaning to our lives and allows us to develop personality, establish profound relationships, and get an advantage in the labor market. Additionally, the only way to overcome the fear of taking responsibility of myself is to start realizing that things will change…

Introduction In today's society, 65 percent of public schools recorded that one or more violent incidents involving students had taken place, amounting to an estimated 757,000 incidents (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2017). In order to reduce crime, more police officers are being placed in schools. These school specific officers are called school resource officers, or SROs, who are employed by local police departments, sheriff's agency, or school systems where they typically work closely with school administrators to attempt to create a safer environment (US Department of Justice, 2016). Their main tasks are to be an educator on crime prevention, informal counselor, and law enforcer (Thomas, B., Towvim, L., Rosiak, J., & Anderson,…

As a first-generation Latina student, I was significantly influenced by the Student Affairs staff at my undergraduate institution. When I arrived to Ramapo College I realized I was not prepared for college-level work, if it was not for the Educational Opportunity Fund Program I would have felt lost and would have struggled both academically and financially. My mother did not have the opportunity to graduate from high school or earn her GED because she had to work at a young age to help my grandmother in the Dominican Republic. Seeing my mother’s leadership, work ethic, and sacrifices gives me the fuel to one day have a better life by earning my Masters degree and making a difference in my community. My approach for students to gain these opportunities is reflected in the model I have established following support tools for student services by challenging students growth and development by challenging their educational and leadership opportunities. Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…
