Student Run Free Clinic Analysis

I am involved in the Student Run Free Clinic held in Albania. Fundraisers and volunteers allow the clinic to provide checkups and over the counter medications to many Albanians. Since its inception in 2015, the clinic has serve over 3,000 people. Due to the majority of Albanians living in rural and low-income areas, there is an unequal coverage of healthcare around the country. Free clinics help to bridge the gap of health inequities. I believe healthcare is a fundamental human right and it's troubling that low income countries lack basic health services. The University of Michigan interests me because they have programs like Bachelor’s degree in public health. Through such programs, I would learn to analyze and evaluate interventions to improve

My journey first began when I decided to attend The University of Iowa in the fall of 2013 after graduating from Urbandale High School. I attended Iowa for 2 years and then when it came time to choose where I would apply to nursing school at I was stuck between wanting to continue on at Iowa’s College of Nursing, pending on my acceptance, but also needing a change in my life. I decided to choose change and Mercy College of Health Sciences presented an opportunity for just that. There is a program offered at Mercy College of Health Sciences (MCOHS) that was too good for me to pass up. My current focus has been on achieving my BSN and the program I had heard about was fairly new but provided an opportunity for me to get my BSN while doing it in only 2 short years.…

I’ve had a variety of exposures to healthcare. I’ve worked in locations ranging from medically isolated villages in rural Africa to urban clinics in the United States, and I’ve been guided by physicians representing disciplines such as family medicine, infectious disease, and pediatrics. Just as diversity is essential to medicine, a diverse range of exposures is equally important for a medical student. The reason I am most interested in the Columbia-Bassett program is because it will provide me with a unique opportunity to learn about health care in two very different environments. This will enrich my capacity to work as a physician.…

My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). Prior to matriculation from the program my source of motivation held no true direction, I wanted to simply “help people”. During SPHSP I was exposed to federally qualified health centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to new medium to help people. I admired the measures that FQHC put in place to effectively serve a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. FQHCs aligned closely to the sense of equity that I began to develop as I was exposed to communities suffering from health disparities over the course of the internship.…

In the past, I thought health concerns were based on individual cases but, through my experience at a free public health clinic, this may not always be the case. There were certain patient behavioral patterns that left one thinking of a causality effect. From time to time, either due to a language barrier or to assist with the transcribing of notes into the EMR, I would assist the pediatric healthcare providers with their consultation with families. Most families seen at the clinic are of poverty status and with this status come certain trends. For example, on various occasions children would suffer from constipation.…

When it comes to addressing disparities in the United States, people tend to think of each issue separately. It is easy to get overwhelmed with the racial issues that revolve around today’s society. Educational disparities occur because minority students tend to live in impoverished neighborhoods where schools are not as good and families do not have the money to pay for college. Health care disparities occur because there are no clinics or doctors in impoverished areas willing to help. However, these issues can be addressed by using an intervention that connects multiple issues and fixes disparities in each area.…

However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured.
