Student Retention Paper

Improved Essays
The campus issue I chose to focus on is student retention and how it correlates with the socio-economic status of the student. I chose this topic and study group because it is very closely related to the field I currently work in, and I can get some hand on experiences while working through this semester. I currently work for the Student Success and Persistence department where we work towards helping student retention campus wide for first year college students. Since I work at a community college a vast majority of our students are nontraditional and are not straight out of high school. I feel this will be a great learning experience for me in this course, and in the professional field. Recently, we started a FAST program where students

If employees feel that their work does not match up with their pay they will seek employment elsewhere.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

In the United States, high school graduates are faced with various options when deciding what route, they plan to take after high school. Some students may decide to enlist in the Armed Forces, go straight into the work force, enroll in a 4-year university or college, or a 2-year community college, though most high school graduates, 69% in fact, chose to continue their education and enroll in some form of post-secondary institution (United States Bureau of Labor Statistics). A study by the United States Bureau and Labor Statistics discovers that of those who chose to enroll in a post-secondary institution, majority happen to be Asian (83%), followed by Whites (71.1%), Hispanics (68.9%) and African Americans (54.6%) and of those who continue…

The two important topics that I believe residents should be educated on when they live in campus housing are: the importance of embracing and respecting diversity as well as the dangers of drug use and alcohol consumption. I believe that each resident should be informed of the importance of embracing and respecting diversity whether it is racial, sex, sexual orientation, or even socioeconomically. I often hear people use homophobic and racist comments either as direct insults or in regular conversation and I feel that such language, which is very inconsiderate, derives not just from hate but ignorance. This topic is important because everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect no matter what.…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…
