Student Retention Essay

Retention is a very serious decision that shouldn’t be made lightly. I firmly believe that retention should be used when all other methods have been extinguished. Is it a choice? Yes, it is. It should be used in extreme cases. I believe that retention is an option because in some cases it’s the only method left. If administrators, counselors, and educators all provide different methods for a struggling student and that student still doesn’t meet the criteria set forth then no other option is left. You shouldn’t promote a student that has not proven they deserve the promotion. Parents should be on board with the decision to retain the student and the school should have adequate documentation supporting the choice of retention. If nothing has been done for that student all year and the first conversation about the problem is to notify the parent of retention then that is not the right solution. I believe that in some cases it is very beneficial for students to be retained for maturity reasons. In those cases it must be extreme for an educator to suggest retention based on behavior and maturity reasons.

It seems to be very interesting and I think it would work wonders in my building. I have asked her if I could do the initial research on it and work up a proposal for our principal.
