Student Portfolio Analysis

This portfolio is a compilation of my experiences with the assignments and activities I have completed in English this semester. Being an undergraduate student has influenced my writing in two ways, critical thinking and academic writing style. Critical thinking is the ability to think independently. It includes providing an original perspective and making connections between ideas and your work. You should organise your ideas into logical points and explain, not just describe quotes and examples. Academic writing style is the usage of formal writing. It does not have to be complicated and elaborate, rather well organised and presented in logical order. It involves the usage of clear precise language and not emotive language. I learned to follow guidelines and my answers were more specific and I used correct grammar and punctuation. I was surprised that we were not required to write an exam, rather put together a portfolio of evidence. This is my first experience in compiling a portfolio and I was unsure what it would entail.

The highlight was the various opinions, ideas and answers formulated by different people I have encountered through the discussion forum and chat groups.
Being permanently employed and studying part-time is challenging. It was difficult to make time for studies. An eye opener was the importance of organisational skills and time management.

After studying English this semester, I am able to express myself better and my writing is more interesting than it used to be. I acquired new knowledge and my improved my communication skills. Overall, the learning journey in

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

For years, seniors at Preston High have been required to present a portfolio in order to graduate. While this tradition has been preached to the students from the start of freshman year, no one begins to take it seriously until a few weeks before they are due. During those last couple of weeks, everyone runs around trying to dig up any examples of good work, peer reviews, transcripts, letters of recommendations, along with many other odds and ends from their high school careers. The result of the major last minute preparation performed by almost the entire senior class is comes out to be a binder filled with unorganized papers with a sometimes shoddy presentation. After it is all said and done, the portfolios end up in the trash or under someone’s…

As time ticks by, my hands rush to scribble down letters to form the first essay of the first semester, then the second, and finally the last. Throughout the first semester, students in Honors English experienced writing essays in a short amount of time while trying to maintain the essay’s quality. I believe that although I did well in some parts of my Summer Reading Essay, The Odyssey Essay, and Character showing Empathy Essay, there were pieces of the essays that could be improved and in the future, I aim to achieve the goals I have set up to enhance my work.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

English 2010 has been a learning experience for me, I've been able to learn a lot about english that I did not know or work on before. With the first essay that we worked on I did a memoir I really enjoyed working on this paper, In class we were able to get freedom to add pictures to are pictures make it a little bit more creative I certainly was not used to this; I’ve been told my whole schooling experience that you have the intro and the conclusion and three body paragraphs. The memoir I was able to write to what I felt like I needed it to be, add pictures so it could appeal more to the eye when reading and also made it easier.…
