When one masters the art of an instrument, his or her lifetime captures benefits. Throughout my high-school and middle-school career, I enjoyed playing the clarinet in band and developed a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Band has provided me with opportunities to develop new, but lasting friendships and has taught me how to interpret musical elements. My mentors challenged me to overcome boundaries and to master the art of playing the clarinet, which affected all aspects of my life. Not only did I learn to preserve when passages presented difficulty but also to multitask through reading notes, counting rhythms, watching the conductor, and playing dynamics. My involvement in band has equipped me to enter the workforce as a studious young

As students rush into class, Shannon Anderson, the White Bear South Campus Band Director, sits patiently in her office, wearing her casual band jacket with her last name on it. As students come into her office to ask her questions, she remains calm and is very friendly. “To me, caring for the students is more important than caring about the music”, says Mrs. Anderson while answering questions that range from counting music all the way to relationship advice. Mrs. Anderson’s drive for music became present while she was in band in the 6th grade. Her passion for teaching she says was different, she always loved to play school with her brother, and always wanted to become a teacher from the time she was little.…

There were so many stories about people who have that one or two songs being a hit, and then that being the end of their careers or those musicians turning into a mess. Also being a person that prefers more privacy and personal space, it seemed like a not so much of a fun career. I decided that I should follow my parents’ advice because they know what is best for me and I’m academically better off than through entertainment. These significant events of learning the experiences I would have gone through both paths and the influences from those around me have made an impact on my ability to determine my destiny. This is to choose to listen to my parents and working hard and do my best in school, to hopefully earn a useful degree.…

I was striving for an unattainable goal because I didn’t work towards any form of progression. On the other hand, being an instrumentalist has taught me the importance of daily goals, a good work ethic, and dedication. With that in mind, I am becoming more aware that music is not just the notes on an staff but also the zipping of a jacket and even the tumbling on a trampoline floor. I believe that my five year old self would be proud of who I am becoming because I have already completed my personal goals instead of lacking improvement in the shadows of someone…

As a result of continuous practice and persistence, I became the principal player in my freshman band. Before entering high school band, notwithstanding the effort, I faced financial challenges. My family could not afford a trombone or pay for band to let me continue my dreams. But I did not surrender hope, and asked my band teacher for help while my parents sought aids from my relatives. Fortunately, I could purchase a student model instrument at a cheap price and continue to play in high school.…

Over the years I have met new people and learned many things in the short time I have been apart of band. Four years I never thought I would be lead trumpet, and be able to play at a higher level. I could go on for hours about how much band has taught me. One of the biggest things that band has taught me is how to cooperate with my peers.…

Jimi Hendrix, the legendary guitarist once said “Music is my religion”. It is a statement that can best describe the strong sense of belonging I have had towards music ever since I picked up my first instrument while in school. After completing my engineering, I spent a couple of years trying to be a full time musician. It was here that I realized that Income generation for an independent musician can be very elusive; I had to make a decision to apply for a corporate job. The reasons for this decision would also be the seed that would later germinate to provide the necessary impetus for our music related startup JamGenie.com.…

One of the most important items in my life is my instrument, the alto saxophone. Pressing down different keys, playing different melodies, making different sounds, makes playing the saxophone so interesting and fun to play. I’ve played the instrument since the 6th grade, and I still get enjoyment out of using it However, the reason why I like the saxophone is not primarily because I love to play the instrument, but rather because I get to be in band because of it. Since moving to Michigan, most of my close friendships have been made because of the people in band. I remember meeting my section in the 7th grade, and that’s actually how I met my best friend, as he’s in the saxophone section.…

I worked tooth and nail to succeed in my academics, piano and saxophone, and any goal I set my eyes on. For public school, since freshman year, I had set my eyes on becoming woodwind captain for my school, J.P. Taravella, and making the all county jazz band. Through over 230 hours of marching band, and countless more hours improving saxophone, I had finally achieved both goals and continued to improve on my craft. This motto of good better best gave me the momentum to never stop trying to outdo myself, and this later also…

I've played the clarinet for seven years. When I first started playing the clarinet I was in the sixth grade I wasn't very good. In fact, the only reason I had joined the band was because my friends and I didn't get into the same elective; they'd been forced into band, while I was one of the lucky few who'd gotten into computer science. The thought of being separated from my friends did not sit well with sixth-grade me and that's why, at the beginning of sixth-grade, I found my self sitting in band holding a brand new clarinet. Anyways, sixth-grade flew.…

During my 8th grade year, I had joined band searching for a chance of belonging. I had discovered, however, that band is more than just having a group of people to hang out with. Since I joined about two years later than most, practicing became a requirement. Every night I went home and rehearsed for hours, just so I wouldn’t fall further behind. About 500 blown-out reeds and two broken oboes later…

In Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”, citizens live without individuality, intelligence, and emotions, all of which can be connected to the absence of playable music. In the real world, everyone is affected by music that they listen to or create themselves, but it is truly underestimated. People have the distinguished ability to express their individuality through the varying types of music in the world and how they react to it. Being a musician can challenge someone’s mental and physical abilities and, if they accept the challenge, can make them more intelligent and capable members of society. Music can also cater to one’s differing emotions and help them to understand their feelings and coping methods.…

Evidently while becoming a dual enrollment, I began to prioritize and learned to efficiently manage my time, so I could adjust to the standards and expectations designated by the district. Concert Report Two The concert performance given live that I have attended on Thursday April 20th, 2017 was an organ licentiate recital by Ian Guenette. It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…
