However, some parents believe that this would send a morally wrong message to students. Parents believe that if it was not for the award that was being offered, the students would not participate. Even though incentives could encourage more participation in donation events, students should not be given incentives for serving a selfless act because it encourages students to only participate in donation services when there are rewards involved, it does not give students the right mindset, and does not give students the experience of doing something selflessly.

Students might think that giving to the community and receiving incentives would encourage them to donate more often. It is understandable that students would do absolutely anything to receive extra credit which would include getting involved with more charitable events. For example, a student was given extra credit for helping set up for a school event and helping clean afterwards. This was a voluntary act and helped get things set up faster because there was an extra pair of hands to help. In the end, the student would be willing to help again with more events to help her fellow classmates and faculty but also to receive incentives. Gardiner explains that rewarding the child only motivated the child to reach the reward as quick as possible. Supporting this claim Gardiner also states, “While there may be an initial increase in desired behavior, in most cases, these attempts to buy performance won’t last long. Eventually they may do serious damage to students’ intrinsic motivation” (Gardiner, 1). This statement just further stresses the fact that in the future children will only work hard to receive rewards, but once those rewards are not present the child will stop their hard work. This issue occurs most often in school when teaching a child.…

National Junior Honor Society has been a dream for me over the course of my school career. However, I never thought I’d be able to make it come true. During my life I’ve seen notable examples of leadership, scholarship, service, citizenship, and character in this world and they’ve influenced me as a person and through NJHS I can make each of these pillars more of a part of my life. Leadership, to me, is being someone anyone can look up to. You don’t have to be the strongest, or the smartest, or any of those.…

Scholarship, service, leadership, and character are the characteristics that lay the foundation for success and are the reason why I perform at such a high degree in everything that I do. Although I’ve always had high ambitions for myself, the scholarship aspect of the National Honor Society confirms the importance of education and also reaffirms that anything is possible and it made easier with academic achievement. However, any achievement, academic or not, is meaningless to me if I don’t give back one way or another to the people who made my success possible including teachers, school staff members, fellow classmates, parents, and friends. On top of this, I learned that the smallest of gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life…

There are many different ways in order to give back to the community. A few of these ways include money, time and attitude. Money is, of course, essential to living, therefore a huge amount of money would definitely be helpful but not always necessary. One person does not need to give thousands of dollars to make a difference because someone else can give one dollar and still impact the community. It should be an effort from everyone in the community to give back that way one person doesn 't have to give everything.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
