Student Diversity In Schools

It can be said that student diversity is an over looked topic. Many times teachers run their classrooms with the expectation that all of their students will perform on the same level, solemnly taking any consideration that every student learns differently. I believe one of the biggest misconceptions the teacher has is the “They learned this before” concept. This can be said to cause the teacher to build their expectation to a level the student may find intimidating. This can cause the students to become frustrated or lose confidence in their school performance. This can be avoided if teachers gave their students a quick review before introducing a new topic or unit. By doing this I believe that teachers will be able to gauge at what levels their students are so that they can modify their expectations to fit accordingly.
One thing educators need to keep in mind it the fact that student diversity isn’t limited to the learning styles or academic performance of their students. Teachers must take in consideration the student’s various ethnicities, traditions, cultural practices and religious belief. As a teacher I would like for the parents to know what their child is doing in my class, as well as how they are preforming. One way to have the parent involved with their child’s learning is to have homework assignments in which a parent/guardian would have to participate. By doing this the parent/guardian will have an idea on what topic the class is currently covering. Another way to have parents involved is asking if possible for their presence in the classroom. This will allow the child to see that their parents are involved in their learning and wish to see them
