The counselor used empathy when the patient discussed about her relationship with her father. The counselor used concreteness to ask what “freezing someone out” meant to her. The counselor used self-disclosure to connect with the patient and let her be aware that many people fear the future and may have doubt about themselves in regards to being a counselor. The counselor used confrontation to remind the patient to focus exploring her thoughts and feelings, opposed to discussing about other’s thoughts and feelings. The counselor used immediacy to address the patient’s smile and laugh when discussing the feelings of betrayal she felt towards the males who had assaulted her. The counselor praised the patient for being vulnerable during the counseling sessions as well as highlighting her process from all ten sessions.
Outcome: Patient was able to explore her feelings in the here-and-now during the counseling sessions. She stated that because of the counseling sessions, she has become more aware of herself in terms of being able to recognize her patterns of breathing, as well as her smiles and laugh when she’s nervous. She has also expressed that she is trying to connect with her father through cooking to rebuild their relationship.
Recommendations: Further counseling is needed. Issues that remain unfinished are conflicts with communication between the patient and her father and feeling uncomfortable when people touch or grab her
