Student athletes at Governor Livingston High School take physical education classes all year long. At Summit High School, varsity athletes who play three seasons of sports, about 30 students, can opt out of physical education classes one day a week, in season.
New Providence, Chatham, Watchung Hills and Millburn high schools, some of the most academically competitive schools in the state, permit student athletes to opt out of physical education in season, with parental permission. A few limit this privilege to sophomores, juniors and seniors. In each instance, the students who opt out go to a supervised study hall.
