For example representing your school when you put on that jersey and step onto that field or court. There are also struggles, like trying balance out the day. With practice everyday and homework to do it can lead to lack of sleep which can cause the athlete to perform worse physically and mentally (Runyan). “Sleep is critical to good athletic and academic performance” (Runyan). There’s a lot of pressure put on these young athletes, they’re expected to perform well academically and athletically, all while staying healthy (Harvey). Studies have actually shown that the more time spent on homework can cause lower test grades (Howard). Having a young adolescent/teenager try and sit there for 2-3 hours, is nearly impossible. They can’t focus and will eventually give up all together causing it not to get done. If a student doesn’t get it done or turned in, it goes towards their grades, even if they get the material (Strauss). Then then there are students who stay up late all night trying to finish all their homework and get no sleep, which leads to poor performance during school (Runyan). Even though homework is meant to help the students do better in class, it can still bring their grade significantly down. Homework can also cause stress to the student and their household stress. High school is 4 stressful, fun years of young teenagers finding out who they are and who they want to be in life. Throughout high school teenagers get their license, some become employed, they start looking at colleges, they start paying for their own stuff, etc. They also start worrying about the future, which is pretty stressful by itself.
