In 2012, then-Ohio State third string quarterback Cardale Jones tweet out his frustration with having to attend classes. "Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL classes are POINTLESS." – Cardale Jones The tweet received negative backlash as Jones was seen as yet another irresponsible college football player misusing his opportunity. However, the biggest issue with Jones’ tweets is that he just may be right. In August 2015 Bleacher Report published a report showing the most popular areas of study amongst student athletes in all five of the power conferences. Some form of Business major listed number one in all five with Communication and Kinesiology/Exercise Sciences being extremely popular as well.
The term “student-athlete” claims that athletics are nothing more than an extracurricular activity to take part in while receiving an education. Yet the time and effort, and money made from it, suggests that it may be the other way around. Lee feels that the term should in fact be the other way around depending on the sport a person is playing.
As time has passed the perception of what a student athlete is change evolved. Ask an athlete from the 90s and they’ll tell you that “purest form of a student athlete is one that commits to their sport understanding that, that’s their true passion and most likely the driving force of the university that they attend while at the same time respecting the responsibility that go with working towards getting your
