Within the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, I am currently assigned 12 doctorate-level students to advise throughout the three-year program. I meet with them at least one time each semester at which time I can provide insight on which electives a student …show more content…
Because of the competitiveness involved in being accepted and successfully completing the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, many of the advisees experience high levels of stress and anxiety. I have learned in my short time as clinical faculty, the need to use active listening techniques, using restatement or clarification statements to prompt the student to self-reflect instead of immediately providing him or her with a solution. As some students require more support with reflective processes, the level and type of advising I offer is unique to the individual. In all cases, I attempt to maintain an open-mind and remain sensitive to the personal elements that are innate to that individual. When a student significantly struggles with academics or professional behaviors, a remediation plan is implemented and monitored by me as the advisor, as an attempt to avoid dismissing the student from the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. These remediation plans vary based on the concerns identified, as well as when and where the struggles experienced by the student occurs. The title of the project I was assigned to read was: Physical Activity and The Recurrence of Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review. As a physical therapist, I was able to use my academic and clinical training and skills to provide feedback that enhanced the students’ end product. Along with the written literature review I also assisted the primary course instructor in assessing the students’ oral presentation of the research findings. In addition, I was a Faculty Preceptor for a student in the Master of Public Health program during the 2015-16 academic year. The title of the project I was assigned to oversee was: A geographical focus to improve infant mortality: A community needs-assessment project. I assisted the student in the preparation and submission of the Institutional Review Board project application, consulted with the student and her community preceptor during data collection, and reviewed the final
