The days of writing on chalkboards, students sitting in straight rows, and teacher directed lessons via textbooks and lectures are outdated. However, I believe student achievement is still the top priority in classrooms today. Society, along with education has changed over the years at a rapid pace. Today, schools must promote new ways of teaching and learning to prepare students for twenty first century skills. Teaching my students how to learn for themselves is important. In addition, twenty first century learning also allows my students to learn from each other, rather than what I impose on them to learn. I fell when students have a direct input into their learning, this makes for an enormous difference in the effectiveness with my students. …show more content…
Guskey, 2005 states, “Powerful professional development consists of highly effective professional development learning experience that accomplish their specified purpose to significantly improve the capacity of education to help all students” (2005). In order to achieve these goals I must incorporate state standards, curriculum and instruction into all areas of education with clear philosophies and purpose for learning so true success is achieved. In addition, I strive for my classroom instruction to include a collaborative environment, higher order thinking skills, opportunities for creative expression, inquiry based learning, hands on learning, as well as, metacognition and information and communication technologies (ICT) tools to ensure twenty first century education. Last, students perform better and form stronger connections with curriculum if they are able to demonstrate their knowledge with immediate positive teacher feedback. Portfolios, rubrics along with interviews, one on one questioning help students achieve their goal successfully. Even though our curriculum is influenced by No Child Left Behind and Texas Essential of Knowledge and Skills, the instruction should be taught using the twenty first century approach. Saavedra and Opfer, 2012 states that “Teachers can design instruction in many ways so student learn from and with others developing their ability to work in teams and building others in 21st century skills” (2012). The standards and purpose of education are changing; therefore, teaching strategies must change in order to reach optimal learning from all students.
