Struggles In The Outsiders

“She looked at me straight in the eye. ‘Things are rough all over.’” (Hinton 34, 35). The novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton is about a group of Greaser friends who get in trouble with a group of Socs. The Socs take it too far one night, sending Ponyboy and Johnny on the run. Ponyboy and Johnny go through many conflicts, and solve very few problems in the end. S.E. Hinton’s theme of “things are rough all over” is evident in the struggles the Greasers and Socs face. However the Greasers face greater struggles than the Socs because they live in poverty, they don’t get a very good education, and the Socs get all the breaks. The most important difference is the that Greasers live in poverty, while the Socs are rich. Pony says, “We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class.” (Hinton 3). For example, Darry works two jobs in order to support his brothers. This is important because it shows how much Greasers struggle with money. Plus, Soda dropped out of school and got a job at a gas station to help Darry support Pony and himself. Therefore, the reader can see that the Greasers’ struggles are far greater than the Socs. In paragraph one, it states that Greasers have very little nice material items and don’t have very good education, unlike the Socs who get it all. In paragraph two, it is said that the Greasers don’t have the same money as they Socs do and have a very serious struggle with money. In paragraph three, it says that the Greasers don’t have good education and have to give up many things just to have one. Even then it is not very good. Lastly, it must be said that Greasers have it far worse than the Socs because they are so poor. Cherry may have said that things are rough for everyone, but at least Socs do not have to wonder if they are going to have anything to eat for
