The Struggles of All Single Mothers
Can you imagine what it is like to be the ruler of the island while also trying to raise your children alone? Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey shows the life of a single mother, Queen Penelope. She must rule Ithaca while raising her son Telemachus in the absence of her husband. She has no one to rely on, she is on her own, and the responsibility weighed heavily on her. King Odysseus has left for the Trojan War for the past 20 years. Penelope is doing everything she can as she waits for Odysseus to return home. This epic poem and an article written by Foerstner reveal the challenges that all single mothers struggle.

Being both a mother and father is tons of work. A Chicago elementary school teacher said, “Parenting is not for one person” (Foerstner, 3). This proves that raising a child is a job for both a father and mother. Although it is possible for a single parent to raise a child, but it would be more difficult. Raising a child is hard work and responsibilities; there is money, jobs, households, and other things to worry. Just like how Penelope responsibilities’ are to rule Ithaca while taking care of her son, ruling an island alone is full of work, besides Penelope has to raise her son too. Furthermore, single mothers do not know what to do in father-like situations. “Who’s going to buy him a car when he’s 16? And will he really need one?” (Foerstner, 1). This is what a single mother is facing; she does not know what a real father would do. Single mothers are female not men, they have different understanding and thinking. Fathers would know exactly what their sons would need; it is easier for them to decide than single mothers. This adds to the list of things that single mothers need to worry. Which cause them to have more worries than normal mothers do, not that they need to think like a father, however, they still need to act like one. This is why single mothers sometimes cannot act like real …show more content…
There are so many problems that single mothers need to take care of, there is not any time for their children. Without spending time with their children, their children will not have a cheerful childhood to remember. In addition, right after the divorce, single mothers are having difficulty finding out what they need to do and what to tell their children to do. They cannot even act like a father to their children. Single mothers cannot teach their sons to do manly things as a father can. Although single mothers faced these challenges, they are able to overcome them. Some single mothers get help from family members, and others look for a different solution. Therefore, Penelope and other single mothers are good mothers because they never give up on their children, even though they have to raise the children by

After reading The Odyssey, many students today question their teachers: “Why did we read that?” and “How will this help me?” The answer to those questions are of the very conspicuous topics, silently covered by the book. There have been countless relationships throughout the mythological era. The question that comes to mind is that were these relationships, from the sexual part of it, consensual. When a god or goddess seduced a mortal, was the mortal a willing participant engaging in a love affair or was the experience a rape, or sexual violation of a weaker, or inferior person. “The sheer amount of rape in classical myth is staggering, and modern retellings tend to omit or romanticize it” (Morales 2007). In many of these relationships, one of the participants is married, thus committing adultery.…
